On Human Trafficking

2048873899_1365622940Human trafficking is not something that I would normally talk about on Rock His World, but I feel strongly about it and I feel it is a topic that needs to be talked about among Christians. I first heard about Human Trafficking about 4 years ago.  I am saddened that I do not hear more about than I do.  Even in the face of the 300 Nigerian Girls who were abducted by Boko Haram, we hear little about trafficking.  There is a silence on this issue that needs to be changed.

human-trafficking-awareness-trainingWe fought a war about 150 years ago that was suppose to end slavery in this country.  However, it continues to exist in the United States and in the World.  The difference now is that we are not enslaving people because they are of a particular race, now we are enslaving our own sons and daughters as well as people from other nations.  It is hard to get accurate information on Human Trafficking, but I am going to use information from A21, (Link is listed below.)

A21 is Ministry of Christine & Nick Caine.  I heard Christine speak at a conference a little while back and I was blown away by her testimony and by her energy.  A21’s goal is: Abolishing Injustice in the 21st Century.  They are a good place to start if you want to know more about this topic.

Some Facts:

  • There are more slaves in the world today than at any other point in human history, with an estimated 27 million in bondage across the globe.
  • The average age of trafficking victims is 12 years old.
  • Only 1-2% of all victims are ever rescued.
  • Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings, mainly for the purposes of forced labor and sex trafficking. As the world’s fastest growing criminal industry, it affects every nation across the globe. Every thirty seconds, someone is forced into this type of bondage—modern slavery.

Some Thoughts

This is slavery and slavery is about exploitation and devaluing others, for the sake of profit and power.  A couple of sites I looked at said that only about 25% of those who are trafficked are sent into the sex trade industry.  The rest are farm workers, domestic servants, and factory workers.

RHW is a opposed to prostitution in all forms.  The Bible clearly speaks about the dangers of it.  I think the fact that the vast majority of the prostitutes out there are slaves makes it an even greater crime, both against God and against women (and men.)  If guys would stop using prostitutes that would end one part of human trafficking and save almost 7 million people from that form of slavery.

All too often, we have thought of prostitution as a victimless crime, there have even been cries to legalize it everywhere.  Or society has romanticized prostitution, almost making it noble that woman turns to something hard, something beneath her in order to survive and give her a future.

The truth is, most of the women (and men) in prostitution are captives of thehuman-trafficking-bars_0ir pimps.  They are controlled, watched, and dominated by the pimp.  They cannot leave; they are punished if they don’t make enough money.  They are starved, they often times forced into drug addiction to help them be more controllable.  All of this so that some guys can satisfy his desires outside of marriage.

It bothers me, as a man that so much of this problem comes because of men’s actions.  Sometimes we think we have come so far as people, as a society, as a world wide community, yet we allow this to happen.  We have not come very far at all.

In looking back in history, we see that the biggest cry against slavery, the biggest voices that sought to stop it, both in the United States and in Great Brittan was that of Christians.  Christians spoke out and acted, we must be willing to do that again.  For if we don’t who will?

What We Can Do:

  • Pray – Pray that this form of slavery will be abolished right away.  Pray for organizations that are seeking to end human trafficking.
  • Raise Awareness – Talk about this issue, let people know that it exists.
  • Open Your Home – When people are rescued, they need a place of sanctuary, a place of escape.  What a great way to share the love of God.
  • Donate – Find an organization that seeks to end Human Trafficking and help support them.

More to Come…

Make Out Monday

A Friend Suggested this first song for Make Out Monday, it kind of reminded me of the second one, so I included it.

I don’t know how you feel about Adele, but every time I listen to her, I think she ought to be about twice as old as she really is to get the depth of emotion that she brings to a song!

Carly Simon – You Belong to Me

Life

One of my favorite books of all time was, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”  In there one of the characters, a depressed robot named Marvin says, “Life, don’t talk to me about life.”

I am feeling that myself.  The last couple of weeks, have been super busy for me, in every area of my life.  It has kept me from spending any time on RHW.

I wanted to stop by today and say I am sorry I have not been able to be here.  I wanted to wish you a wonderful and blessed Easter. I wanted to share one of my favorite worship songs with you.  I think it is a great song for Easter.

May the Blessings and Power of Easter be Yours Now and All the Days of Your Life!

One View of Respect

I have been very interested in the recent wave in marriage blogs on the subject of Respectrespect.  I have to admit that I had not thought about it much, I think I just assumed respect was something that would naturally happen in marriage.  However, the more I read, learned and thought about it, the more I realized that it does not happen by chance and that we have to be careful to make sure respect is taking place in our marriage.

I found it interesting in the Bible that men are commanded to “Love is wife” and that women were commanded to “Respect her husband.”  (One passage addressed to women tells them to both love and respect their husbands.)  I think this reveals God’s understanding of who we are; wife’s need love and husband’s need respect.  (Before we get to far afield here – yes, a husband needs to respect his wife that is a part of loving her as Jesus loves the church.  I think a woman will have more a natural tendency to love her husband, but husbands need love also.)

Photo Jul 21, 9 44 41 PMIn talking with friends and doing some observations from my own life, I have found one area where I think most of us need to work on in our marriage.  That is listening to each other without interrupting. (This applies to both the husband and the wife.) I think every time we interrupt our spouse, we are showing them disrespect.  We need to learn to listen to them, not with the intention of just responding, but we need to listen with the intention of understanding what our spouse is saying.  (Yes, this is true for every relationship we have, not just with our spouse.)

When we interrupt, it is like telling our spouse, “What you have to say is not as important as what I have to say.”  It hurts to receive that message.  It is not putting the other person first; interrupting is about putting yourself first.  That is contrary to love, respect, treating others as you wish to be treated, and who knows how many other teachings in the Bible.

A quick note here – one thing we can to help cut down on getting interrupted is to nagging craigslistmake sure we have dialogue with our spouse not a monologue.  When either spouse goes on and on and does not give his or her spouse a chance to talk that is when interrupting will be more likely to happen.

You want to respect your spouse? Don’t Interrupt!  Don’t Monologue!  Sounds simple!  In theory those do sound simple, in practice, maybe, maybe not.  We need to make this is one of those things we work on.

April Fool’s Addition of Make Out Monday, Err Tuesday

I am a big fan of Tim Hawkins, I think he is really funny and he amazes how well he can imitate various rock stars.  I have to admit this is not Make Out Music, but it is funny and hey, we need to be able to laugh more in our lives.  BTW – I selected a few of his songs, but I would recommend you spend a little while checking out his other videos.  We own a couple of his concert DVDs and no matter how many times I see them, they always make me laugh. (No, I am not affiliated with Tim Hawkins in any way, just love the guy.)
